Romans 12

As you read this chapter of Romans, please be praying for God to give you insight into Romans as you seek to understand this letter in its historical, literary, and theological context.

Paul writes Romans to a church facing division, disunity, and arrogance. Their root problem seems to be a lack of understanding about how God has saved them. In other words, the Roman church is fuzzy on the Gospel of Jesus Christ and its implications for life in the community. Thus, Paul reminds the Roman church about the mercy of God and how God has welcomed them impartially. Romans 1-11 sets up Paul’s application in Romans 12-16.

The topic of “renewing the mind,” as seen in Romans 12:1-2, is an important exhortation for the Christian. In other words, how we think about God, how we think about ourselves, and how we think about the church are all important thoughts for the Christian. In light of the Christian experience, please reflect on and answer the following questions:

  • How is your thought life? Describe your Christian experience as it relates to your mind.
  • How would you explain to an individual who doesn’t know Jesus how to have victory in the arena of the mind?
  • What strategies do you personally employ to have a mind that is set on Jesus and what He’s accomplished?
