Ephesians 1:9-11Romans 8:28, Genesis 50:20

The context for this devotion is Gen. 37-50, which is the story of Joseph in Egypt. The Bible selections for this week are varied but connected. Even when events in our own lives, regions, or nations, seem random, they serve a purpose. Patience has great rewards. God has all-powerful wisdom and purpose across the history of all the world, for all peoples, and for his particular people, using specific nations and individuals.

The story of Israel’s survival, from Jacob to Joseph in Egypt, is a series of marvels. As Joseph himself says at the climax, “Ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good” (Gen 50:20). The nations, peoples and lands might not all acknowledge the God of the Hebrews, but He still works all things after the counsel of His will.

As you consider this week’s devotion, please answer the following questions.

  • Are there examples in world history, outside of the Bible, of “Josephs” who seemed to be failures, but who ended up having great purpose?
  • Detail recent or current examples of unexpected successes of nations despite great odds.
