Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-14

Paul wrote the book of 1 Corinthians to ensure that regardless of ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, etc., when an individual becomes a part of the body of Christ, he or she is an individual contributor while at the same time part of a team.  Trust, healthy conflict, commitment, and accountability are also important elements of unity and the appreciation of diversity.

There are biblical lessons about group membership, the responsibilities of individual members, and the importance of unity and diversity.  Jesus’ disciples are examples of individuals who are part of a team.  Each had unique characteristics and roles, as was demonstrated in their fishing expeditions and various exploits documented throughout the New Testament.  James, John, and Peter did a lot of speaking, while the others were still important parts of the team.

This pattern continues with team members forming the early church.  Sometimes the members did not agree on strategy, as in the case where Paul and Barnabas parted ways (Acts 15:36-41), but the mission was the same and this division actually multiplied the church.   Some of the apostles were sent to the Gentiles, while others to the Jews. This created ethnic diversity among the believers but required them to remain unified under the cross of Christ.

For teams to be effective, there must be an appreciation of individual members, and their diversity and contribution to a unified team.

What are some biblical lessons we can learn about group membership and the responsibilities of the individual member?
