  • Develop five questions you could use to turn a potential reference into a candidate.   The question could also produce an additional name for a candidate.  The question could be used to produce a job order. These will be used as a basis for this activity’s discussion.
  • Prepare to discuss the full value of a reference check. Ensure the following points are addressed:
    • Sharing your questions with each other can provide a valuable tool set in talk tracks with reference calls.  One method might lead to a modification of another question and so on and so forth.  These tasks are meant to continue helping you create tools as you head into the world of recruiting.  Most important, teach and learn from each other.
    • Make sure you talk about how that reference could be a candidate.  That could be for the current job you are looking to fill, another job order you have open or a future job order.
    • Understand that managers listed as references might be responsible for the hiring process.  If you are a full cycle recruiter, this could be an opportunity to pull a job order.   Again, it could be an opportunity to interview and find out if they have a skill set to fill another opportunity with one of your clients and someone that you put into your future queue.  All these possible scenarios should come to mind as you move forward in asking questions and ultimately be the other focus beyond meeting your due diligence requirements on your current candidate.
