One of the most heartfelt prayers recorded in the New Testament is found in Colossians 1:9-14. In this text, we have the opportunity to peak into the prayer life of the Apostle Paul. His words are both an inspiration to pray for others and a road map for doing so.
This week, you will be learning how to pray through particular passages of Scripture. It is a great way to guide your prayers along biblical paths and it is very easy. You simply turn the words of Scripture into the words of your prayer. You can do it with any passage of Scripture but it is probably easiest to start with the Psalms or the prayers of Paul (i.e., Romans 1:8-10, 1 Corinthians 1:4-8, Galatians 4:19, Ephesians 1:15-16, Philippians 1:3-5, and 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3).
Just as Paul prayed for the church at Colossae, you can use his words to help you pray for yourself and others. Ask God to fill you with knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding (Colossians 1:9). Pray that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him, bear fruit, and increase in your knowledge of Him (Colossians 1:10). Pray that He will help you stay the course and continue in the faith, without shifting from the hope of the Gospel (Colossians 1:23).
Have you ever used the Bible to guide you in prayer? How might this be helpful?
