Matthew 24:36-39;42,44

The disciples wanted to know when Jesus would begin His kingdom and when the end of time would come. He gives them a visual: the time before the flood. It is said that history repeats itself, and to know the past is to understand the present. Those who forget the past are condemned to it and there are many reasons for knowing about past events. In short, we must study history. Christ used an historical event to help teach us of His future coming.

God’s workings in the present, with its advances, conveniences, wonders, inequalities, wars, brutalities, chaos, is better understood when we compare it to history. Humans corrupted the knowledge of God before the flood, and Jesus says we will do it again before His coming. That is our warning, and we should heed that warning and be ready for Christ’s return, just as Noah did when God spoke to him.

As we reflect upon the pre-flood conditions, list some correlations between pre-flood life and today, either good or bad of which Christ was speaking when He said, “Watch therefore” and “Be ye also ready”.
