Once Jesus chose the twelve disciples, there was a great deal of training and development that needed to be done.  It seems the disciples rarely understood Jesus’ mission until after he rose from the dead. However, there were teachable moments of clarity and new understanding that helped the disciples understand their new roles and ministry. One of these teachable moments came for Peter and Andrew when Jesus approached them and called them to be his disciples.  He did not just invite them to accompany him, but he gave them an unusual job description, “fishers of people.” In contrast to their current roles as fishermen, Jesus was foreshadowing how their entire motivation and life purpose would be changing.

Consider your role as a leader in describing the job your potential hires will do.  The way you describe the position makes a significant difference.  Jesus may not have used many words and did not have a formal written description, however the short phrase, “fishers of people,” was a critical teaching moment that he likely referred to and used many more times in helping Peter and Andrew become disciples who would eventually make an eternal difference in millions of people’s lives.

Please answer two of these questions:

  • How would you share your organization’s vision and excite the employee about it?
  • How did Jesus train and develop his disciples?  Give at least two examples.
  • Why do you think some of the disciples were “more successful,” and how does this apply to an human resources manager’s view of hiring and training?
  • Share about an employee that did not work out in your organization (like Judas), and what could be learned from the experience?
