Acts 20:24-28

In Week 1, we are looking at human resources and their connection to the organization’s mission, vision, and success.

In Acts 20, the Apostle Paul is sharing his farewell message to the Ephesian church before setting sail, and he leaves them with instructions on how to lead and oversee the church. Note the purpose Paul writes about in verse 24. Just as Paul had a strong purpose for his ministry, how does this compare to your purpose in life and in your work?

Re-read Acts 20: 28

While this verse was written to church leaders, the principle taught by the Apostle Paul applies to all leaders. You will note that he first says: “Keep watch over yourselves.” A leader must make sure they (personally) are in the right place spiritually, emotionally, physically…   before they can oversee others.  How can you make sure you keep yourself fit for leadership?

You will note how Paul goes on to say: “Keep watch over… all the flock.” As “overseers” of organizations, human resources and organization leaders should humbly “shepherd” their organization’s workforce.  By serving them well, human resources leaders can play a critical role in employee well-being, job satisfaction, and work performance. Answer the following questions below in your discussion post:

  • What is your purpose in life and in your work?
  • How can you make sure you keep yourself fit for leadership?
  • What would an HR department specifically do to accomplish the role just described?
