Paul gives careful instruction to Timothy about the nature of his life and doctrine. Paul tells Timothy that he needs to keep a close watch on both of them because he understands practically that they impact those around him. This is what leads Paul to conclude that carefully watching over both will save both himself and those that hear him. Timothy is to be vigilant, because theological drift is a real possibility and the impact that it would have on him and the community would be staggering if he were to drift.
