Read Hebrews 11:6 and Psalm 14:1
The Bible provides a decidedly negative view of those who do not believe in God. An interesting phenomenon in the modern world is a growing number of atheists or skeptics. Many atheists would describe themselves as having evolved beyond the need for a god. The Bible describes this person as a fool. Interestingly, most people would think that religion necessitates a god. However, there is such a thing as a non-theistic religion. This week’s lesson examines non-theistic religions, as well as atheism, as a belief system. In preparation for this week’s lesson, give some thought to atheism.
Think of the meaning of atheism. Perhaps you have enjoyed John Lennon’s ode to atheism, Imagine. In that song he suggests that the way to bliss is by imagining no heaven above, no hell below, and no religion. Reality is quite different if one looks at the result of atheistic regimes in the 19th and 20th century.
After careful reflection, please answer these questions.
- What do you think of Atheism? Use at least 2 paragraphs to describe your thoughts.
- What would the world be like if God did not exist? How would you justify your beliefs of right and wrong?
- Explain what survival of the fittest means. Is this the best ethic for humans? Why or why not?
