Isaiah 40:12-14

This passage of Scripture has some of the most beautiful language about God found in Scripture. God Himself is asking man, “Can you do what I do? Can you hold the waters of earth in the hollow of your hand?” A visit to Huntington Beach, CA (known as Surf City USA) and viewing wave after wave crashing in forces one to consider the enormity of the Pacific Ocean. Who has measured the waters? God Himself controls all the forces of earth. Verse 13 speaks of the incredible wisdom of God when it says, “Who has directed the Spirit of God.” Who can do that? Although many might try, no one can.

This passage shows one aspect of the work of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. Among other things, He was a large part of the creation of the world. In His wisdom, He was part of the overall planning of the universe. Other passages speak of His creation of the stars (Psalm 33:6), creation of earth (Genesis 1:2), creation of animals (Psalm 104:24,30), and even the creation of man (Job 33:4). If the Holy Spirit created all things, we can trust Him to maintain all things. We can trust Him with our life today.

  • Why do people, even Christians, think they are smarter than the Holy Spirit and can offer counsel?
