This week we will focus on the biblical practice of “honesty.” Being truthful at all times is difficult. Speaking honestly may hurt someone’s feelings. Honesty, however, is a character trait employers seek. The ability to be honest with others and yourself is something that God wants for your life.
Being honest does not give us a green light to be cruel. Being honest also shouldn’t keep us from communicating a truth. The often repeated saying, “It you cannot say something nice, then don’t say it at all,” may not be applicable to a leader. Leaders need to be clear in both praise and correction. Consider the past devotions from this course. If your motivation is love and you have the attitude of peace, then your honest communication will be seen as an act of compassion.
Read Psalm 15 and note the blessing which comes from the practice of honesty. Identify the words which are connected to the practice of honesty. In addition, identify the words connected to dishonesty.
- In general, when you think about honesty, what key words come to mind? When you think about dishonesty, what words come to mind?
- What does the practice of honesty look like to you? How can you be an honest leader in words and in deeds?
