This week we will focus on the biblical principle of “unity.” The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines unity as: a condition of harmony or continuity without deviation or change (as in purpose or action).
Read Ephesians 4:1-6. Paul writes to those in Ephesus encouraging them to live a life worthy of the calling they have received. As followers of Christ, we are told to be humble, gentle, patient and bearing with others in love. In Ephesians 4:3, Paul writes we are also told to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. We find unity in one God and in one faith.
In the book The Power of His Presence, Pastor Stedman asks two key questions in regards to unity: “Have we realized that it is not our job to produce unity, but to discover the unity produced by the Spirit? Have others noticed the peace, love, and life of Christ in us?”
Explore the differences between producing unity and discovering the unity produced by the Spirit. How can God help us discover unity? What are some differences between the dictionary definition of unity and Paul’s writings on unity?
Read Psalm 133. How does David describe unity? Following David’s expressive example, write in your own words what unity looks like.
