, Paul expresses a prayer that results in a magnificent promise. The prayer includes several specific, sequential requests, with each built upon the previous. Only as the last request is fulfilled does the full promise come to bear. You will notice that Paul starts by praying in verse 16 that “out of his glorious riches” you would be strengthened in your inner being through the work of his Spirit. As you approach ministry in general, and pastoral care in particular, it will be necessary that you are daily strengthened by the Spirit of God, who will give you wisdom and strength to carry out the work of ministry.
Once you are strengthened through his Spirit, then Christ “can dwell in your hearts.” This is not talking about salvation, but is talking about Christ feeling at home in your hearts, or being comfortable in your hearts. This results in you being “rooted and established in love.” It is this love that will be your biggest help as you care for God’s people. When His love fills your life, it spills out onto every life you touch.
Once you are filled with His love, then you understand the scope of his love and “know” it so that you’re filled with all the fullness of God. It is at this point that God is able to do in your life that which is immeasurable.
Consider how important it will be for you to have the power of God in your life as you care for His people, and particularly as you are involved in pastoral counseling.
