Read Proverbs 29:2; 1 Corinthians 16:14

Creating authority in the classroom is essential for effective teaching and maintaining a positive learning environment. But authority is not about asserting dominance; it’s about cultivating an environment where respect, love, and learning thrive together. As educators, our authority reflects the love and respect we sow in the fertile ground of the classroom.

These verses give us insight into how we can set up our classrooms.  We can develop rules and enforce them with a strong arm and consequences, or we can enforce our rules with love, compassion and understanding. This consideration can be a conundrum for us because if we discipline with great authority, do we risk quashing all love for learning?  On the other hand, if we discipline with few restrictions, do we risk losing control where little learning takes place? We must be consistent in our expectations, rules, and consequences, which helps students to feel secure.  Respect is earned. Our classrooms should nurture a growth mindset, and we should lead with humility. This leads to a well-managed classroom which promotes a love for learning.

With God’s help, our classrooms can become a haven for learning. The guidance in these verses is that we set rules that have structure and consistency, but which are enforced through love, compassion, and understanding.

After careful consideration, please answer the following questions.

  • What do you feel is the ideal behavior management plan for a classroom of elementary students?
  • As a Christian teacher, how do you maintain control of your future classroom while promoting a love for learning?
