Paul presses the church at Ephesus to understand the leaders that God has given to the church, and to know their function in the life of that local church. Their primary responsibility was to equip the saints to do the work of the ministry. Rather than do everything themselves, the leaders were to equip people in the church to rise and play a bigger role in its continued development.
As we continue to think about the church, one of the areas where we might find ourselves struggling is in leadership development. It may be easier for us to just do things ourselves but the call to leaders is that they develop those behind them to serve alongside them. Careful attention must be paid to making sure that we don’t just create an environment around our personality, but develop an environment that pursues Christ together in the church.
After careful consideration, please answer the following questions.
- Why is it important to develop leaders in the church?
- Why do churches struggle to develop leaders beyond the church staff?
