In the life of the church there is arguably no more important step in one’s walk with Christ than the first step, which is Baptism. Baptism is often referred to as an outward sign of inward change. While this is certainly true, we don’t want to diminish the truth of Baptism to become just a mere symbol. While it is a symbol, it is also an entry point into the membership of the church for those who come to saving faith. What we also realize is that when a person is baptized they become a part of our spiritual family and the way that we care for them changes.
Two ordinances given to the church are Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. It is the responsibility of each church to value those ordinances correctly. If we do not teach people to value all the aspects of Baptism, it will be easy for them to forget the seriousness of it. Baptism in the local church should be a time to celebrate, but it is also serious because the body of believers understands the joy of conversion and the seriousness of caring for one another.
After careful consideration, please answer the following questions.
- How can a church create an environment of celebration around Baptism?
- How can a church create an environment of seriousness around Baptism?
