The use of volunteers in our day is a matter of necessity, just as it was in biblical times. It all begins with a mission and a goal. Many things have to be done to prepare volunteers for service. Often the organization must have a volunteer coordinator on staff to facilitate the tedious scheduling and training of volunteers.
Training classes are often needed for the prospective volunteers. Even after the initial training, volunteers need continued education. Jesus continued to train His volunteer staff even after He completed His earthly ministry and ascended back to Heaven at the right hand of God.
The organization that is serious about its volunteer staff’s continued growth supplies them with the tools necessary to succeed. Much as Scripture declares in Philippians 1:6, “being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” In the same way, we work with our volunteers and continue until the mission and goals are completed.
Volunteers give of the most precious possessions they own: their time. They give their time and efforts when they believe the cause they engage in has value that is close to their hearts. Although we do not know the entire conversations Jesus had with his volunteer staff, we can be assured that these men and women found value in His mission and that His ministry touched their hearts. The use of volunteers, which God has set up through His beneficial work throughout Scripture, is not limited to Christ’s ministry alone. It also includes all of us who Christ has redeemed and in whom the Holy Spirit dwells. These are some of the present effects that arise from the perfect conditions God set up during the New Testament times. We ourselves have found value in His Word, and through His Spirit, He touched our hearts. As a result, we volunteer.
