I Have Decided, Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
‘Peek-a boo. I see you’. Little children often imitate others, especially as they’re learning about the world around them. Patterns are what we imitate, and God has patterns and laws which teach us how to function in life. God will always point us to a principle, a pattern, or a law by which to govern us. He is a loving Father who wants to see His children fulfill their purpose in life. To follow God’s pattern we must first identify ourselves with Christ. To know where we are going we have to know who we are. Music also has patterns which govern how music is written or performed. Think of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony…ta ta ta dum… A composition is often defined by the pattern it displays.
In music, the patterns of a repeating design of notes denote its style. Style is often defined by the patterns it displays. Style refers to characteristic features of how music is played or expected to sound (historical periods, composers, performers, rhythmic patterns, and genre) . If one wants to write or perform a certain style of music, it must imitate patterns that are indicative of that style.
Patterns are important in music, just as they are in our lives as we pattern ourselves according to God’s word. It’s in Him we live, we move, and we have our being. When we pattern ourselves after Christ we become more like Him. Others will see, and they will see a pattern of how to know God by watching your example.
