This was written right after election day 2024 in the United States.
Today, the thought that struck me in the wake of the 2024 presidential election is not elation. Don’t get me wrong. I am very happy that American’s have rejected the path to socialism/communism. I am grateful that the Senate will also be in place for president-elect Trump. It’s not fully decided yet but many are optimistic that the House will also be in Republican control giving the 47th president the ability to more readily accomplish the platform he’s outlined.
What is striking to me, though, is the near miss we had…and the mercy that God extended.
I had a college professor that used to say that students often cry for fairness when what they really want (and need) is mercy. That has stuck with me 30+ years now.
Please here me say that I do not believe that Trump is anything close to our Savior. In fact, there are parts of his demeanor and affect that truly bother me as a believer.
However, I can only see the mercy that God extended America through the election of Trump as his platform halts some of the progressive agendas that were truly fighting against the Kingdom of Heaven. It was God’s mercy that held off these items and God’s mercy alone. However, even if He had not allowed Trump to be elected and allowed Harris to be elected. . .or if the Trump presidency will bring about even more turmoil. . .it will be His mercy that carries us through. And when I consider the depths of His mercy towards me, I am so relieved to have it instead of what I should fairly deserve.
I am reminded of a Newsboys song, “Real Good Thing.” The lyrics are as follows:
When we don’t get what we deserve
That’s a real good thing, a real good thing
When we get what we don’t deserve
That’s a real good thing, a real good thing
Born to sin and then get caught
All our good deeds, don’t mean squat
Sell the Volvo, shred the Visa
Send the cash to Ma Theresa
Great idea, the only catch is
You don’t get saved on merit badges
When we don’t get what we deserve
That’s a real good thing, a real good thing
When we get what we don’t deserve
That’s a real good thing, a real good thing
Doctor’s coming, looking grim
“Do you have a favorite hymn?”
Check your balance through the years
All accounts are in arrears
Guilt is bitter, grace is sweet
Park it here on the mercy seat
When we don’t get what we deserve
That’s a real good thing, a real good thing
When we get what we don’t deserve
That’s a real good thing, a real good thing
When we don’t get what we deserve
That’s a real good thing, a real good thing
When we get what we don’t deserve
That’s a real good thing, a real good thing
When we don’t get what we deserve
That’s a real good thing, a real good thing
When we get what we don’t deserve
That’s a real good thing, a real good thing
There is no greater relief than resting in His mercy for us.
