Singing isn’t an option in Scripture. It’s a command. Singing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs is a means of teaching and reinforcing our knowledge of God. Singing biblical truth makes a significant contribution to spreading the Gospel to obey the Great Commission. Singing is a form of prayer. As we proclaim His name using psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, we make known to others His goodness and love for them. Singing helps us express our worship to God and it’s a way to express our appreciation for the blessings He has showered upon us. There is spiritual power in music when it’s focused on God, and hymns express biblical truth. Singing is also good for your health, both physical and spiritual.
Research has shown that singing is good for you and can bring healing to your spirit, soul, and body. Singing can be a form of meditation. Physically, it may help lower stress, boost immunity and lung function, enhance memory, improve mental health, and help you cope with physical and emotional pain. Spiritually, when we focus our singing on God, we invite Him into our hearts, minds, and circumstances. As we focus on God’s goodness, it opens our minds to hear what He has to say to us. Colossians 3 and Ephesians 5 tell us to sing “to God” and “to the Lord” because he is the object of our praise. Ephesians 5:19 says, “singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart. Singing helps us to memorize important truths from Scripture with clear and practical applications. We take the focus off ourselves and look to God for answers in all areas of our lives.
There is spiritual power in music because of its ability to touch our souls and move us spiritually. Singing has such a unique way of bringing your heart, soul, mind, and strength together to focus entirely and completely on God. In an age of distraction, singing grabs the attention of all our senses and focuses us on God. Devotional singing can be a deeply personal and sacred experience which connects with our spirituality in a very meaningful way.
