1 Kings 12:1-17

As leaders, we have an obligation to accept accountability and challenges from those around us. We may not always agree or even appreciate those who present an alternate view, but it is in these moments we can examine our actions and intentions through the eyes of other capable leaders.

Rehoboam failed to accept the advice of those who had wisdom from years of experience serving his father. They were challenging the way Solomon had taxed the people and forced hard labor on them. As we lead, we must examine our intentions and willingness to listen. We must be willing to admit we are not always right and may need to alter the path we have taken.

  • In this week’s devotional response, discuss the decision that Rehoboam was facing.
  • How does this decision speak to the process of leadership development?
  • Share illustrations of decisions like this that affect a leader’s potential effectiveness.
