Galatians 5:16-25

This passage contrasts what it means to live by the Spirit and to live by the desire of the flesh. First, Paul lists several examples of the works of the flesh. These are common when someone is living separated from God. Then, Paul lists what is referred to as the Fruit of the Spirit. Paul contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit.

So how do we produce this kind of fruit in our lives? This fruit is produced by walking in the Spirit, or by yielding to the Spirit who indwells us as believers. Walking in the Spirit is a God consciousness. It’s having Christ foremost in all your affections. It’s pursuing God with all your heart. It’s to have no other idols before you and no other gods before you, but to serve God alone with all your heart. It is our goal as Christians now that we have the Spirit dwelling within us to continually live a life walking in the Spirit.

  • What can a Christian do to help them continually walk in the Holy Spirit?
  • Which of the Fruit of the Spirit are you strongest in? Which of the Fruit of the Spirit are you weakest in? What can you do to improve?
