Matthew 28:18-20 may be the most common Bible reference Christians think of when the topic of missions is raised. Many may have memorized all or part of it. Perhaps the words “Go into all the world” and “Make disciples of all nations” are familiar to you. This passage records one of the final interactions between Jesus and His disciples. It is important to recognize that it was a planned interaction, not just a chance meeting (28:16).
As you meditate on this week’s passage, look closely at the details. For example, note the words therefore and go. The word therefore indicates that something previously said provides a foundation for what is to come. What is that foundation? And the word go indicates a required action. What is that action? What are the various parts of this passage, and how are they connected?
Consider the following as you respond to the above devotional:
- What is it that Jesus is telling His disciples to go and do?
- Do you think this call to action was intended as a call to action only for those disciples? Why or why not?
- What is the basis for Jesus calling His disciples to this action?
