I recently watched “Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming with Dave Letterman” on Disney+. If you get the chance to view it, I highly recommend it. While it seemed that David Letterman was grappling with what he was observing from an outsider to the faith, it was clear that Bono and The Edge have been wrestling with their faith as a band nearly since its inception. They seemed to have eschewed what organized religion was telling them they “had” to do to be good Christians and kept doing what they felt like they were supposed to be doing.
I’ve been a fan of U2 for a number of years and remember their work being played on the Christian radio stations in the 80s before I was a fan.
One of their more famous songs, “Sunday, Bloody Sunday” commemorates the tragic events of the Bloody Sunday massacre of January 30, 1972 in Ireland.
They recently updated their lyrics to the song originally released on their 1983 War album. The last version originally read:
And it's true we are immune When fact is fiction and TV reality And today the millions cry (Sunday, Bloody Sunday) We eat and drink while tomorrow they die (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
They updated this verse to be:
Here at the murder scene The virus of fiction, reality TV Why so many mothers cry Religion is the enemy of the Holy Spirit guide And the battle just begun Where is the victory Jesus won?
As I heard the updated lyrics, it reminded me so much of what we’re talking about with regards to Asymmetric Faith. There is a hunger for the work of God in the world today. Sometimes religion/organizational church works against that and is the enemy of what the Holy Spirit is working to accomplish that.
U2 posted the updated acoustic version on their Twitter account: https://twitter.com/i/status/1487823990592782336
