The greater context of this verse reveals the overwhelming power contained in it. Paul emphasizes the fact that even if you and I would possibly die for a righteous man, we would never die for an unrighteous one. However, Christ died for sinners even though we were all unrighteous before a holy God. Even amidst our sinfulness, Christ willingly went to the cross and became our atonement, though we do not deserve it.
As we begin to compare our human sinfulness to the redemption that is found through Jesus Christ, we should be overwhelmed at God’s mercy. Christ has died for us, even while we were his enemies. Soteriology is often fraught with controversial discussion even when it should cause us to humbly cry out with thankfulness to the God who has saved us. Let us be committed to growing in our love for God, and for the salvation he so richly provides in the person and work of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
After careful reflection, please answer the following questions.
- How can we personally continue to grow in love for Christ regarding our salvation?
- How can a church continue to grow in their love for Christ regarding salvation?
