Read John 10:11-13

This Scripture is about Jesus and His role as the Good Shepherd: the one who provides protection and direction for those who follow Him. The fact that Jesus is the only way to salvation should not be overlooked, but this verse also gives us a contrasting example. Jesus tells us that the hired person will not care for the sheep as the Shepherd does. This is a great example of the business theory referred to as Agency Theory. Agency Theory relates to identifying ways to incentivize employees to make decisions that are in the best interest of a company’s owners.

This week we will talk about the role of managers related to the use of Information Technology. Managers have a responsibility to make decisions and behave in a way that shows they are being good stewards of the organization’s resources. In other words, managers should make decisions that would benefit the organization as if the money and resources they are expending were coming straight out of their own pocket.

The tendency for a manager to put his or her own desires ahead of the organization’s needs is natural. It is this tendency that Jesus is pointing out. As Christians, however, we are called to be good stewards of what God has given us. In other words, as a manager of the organization you should seek to use resources well to make the organization stronger.

An example of how one might do this would be to do your homework related to the cost and benefits of a certain project so that you may make wise decisions. We can also see this in the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25) where those entrusted with the wealth of the master were expected to use the wealth wisely in achieving the master’s goals. While the Parable of the Talents deals with financial resources, we are called to be good stewards of all types of resources (time, abilities, information, wisdom, relationships, and authority). We will give an account for what we have done with the responsibilities, resources, and authority God has given us on earth.
