I Samuel 19:9-10 , Matthew 8:28-33

These passages have sparked debates among some Christians as to whether psychological disorders are caused by “evil spirits” or “demon possession.” In some circles, exorcism still takes place. As students, we can work through difficulties using both scriptural concepts and psychological theories. Psychological research has found that many psychological difficulties may result from biological and/or genetic factors rather than psychological factors. This does not mean the client does not manifest psychological difficulties in behavior, thinking, feeling, etc., but unless the biological/genetic difficulty is treated, the client will not experience any permanent relief from the disorder. Once the biological cause is being treated, the skillful Christian counselor can integrate scriptural and psychological concepts to effectively relieve at least some of the client’s pain. Scripture always tops psychology, but God has gifted some people, even though they are not Christians, to explore and find causes for psychological pain.

  • Consult at least two Bible commentaries and summarize how they interpret these and other scriptural passages that refer to demon possession.
  • How can the working out of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22) in one’s life not only help in spiritual growth, but also in psychological growth?
