I was typing up my prayer list in my Apple notes today, creating a new note so I would have it in there and make it a bit more accessible (do I ever go anywhere without my phone these days?!?). As I was typing the title of the note, I accidentally typed “Prayer Lust” instead of “Prayer List.” I chuckled at the possible Freudian slip/bump of the plane that caused that mistake.
However, it reminded me what often happens with prayer lists. They become a “lust list” that is not really something that God can bless. We ask for prosperity (more money, better things, etc.), power, and other things that are really not aligned with God’s plan for us and others. Sometimes our list becomes so much of that and we ask for it so much that it almost becomes a lust for the things on the list.
Prayer, talking to God, is for the purpose of building our relationship with God. Certainly we are told to ask but if we’re not careful and focus on the things on the list instead of the Lord to which we are praying, we ask amiss.
It certainly reminds me of the humorous Lulu video from years ago, Never Ending Shopping List:
Don’t let your list turn to lust.
