Romans 12:16; Psalms 133:1-3; Psalms 150:1-5
Many love to sing harmoniously with others. Harmony means “beautiful order” which is created by God Himself. The English word stems from the Greek word harmonia, which means “to fit together”. The word harmony is a double entendre. Getting along with others, living in peace with others, is one type of harmony. However, there is harmony in music, as well. There is music which can be sung or played without harmony. But, when harmony is added to a melody, a rich sound is produced which gladdens the ears of the hearers. Likewise, we can live our lives alone in peace, which pleases God, but when we live our lives in harmony with others, we not only honor God, but we honor others, as well.
Harmony in music creates a sense of unity and togetherness. Living in harmony does the very same thing. Harmony in both music and life creates a positive state of inner peace, calmness, and balance, as well as the feeling of being in tune with the world. In the social sciences, it is used to describe a pattern of relationships within a social group and between individuals and their social context. In music, harmony is a core concept. The study of harmony involves the juxtaposition of individual pitches to create chords, and in turn the juxtaposition of chords to create larger chord progressions. When we live harmoniously with others, it creates peace and order in ourselves, our families, our communities and eventually, our nation.
The concept of harmony applies to both how we should live our lives, and how we create beautiful music. In truth, God’s word is based on the concept of harmony. While music is a great way to explain the concept of harmony, faith in God creates harmony which produces sweet praises to God.
