In this passage, we learn that Paul is instructing the Christians at Colossae to be aware of false prophets who teach vain philosophies that contrast with God’s truth. The Colossae Christians were adding to the scripture using teachings of false prophets. They were adding pagan beliefs to their Christian practices. Paul warned them about the world’s philosophies because they are empty and void of truth; they offer nothing to the Christian.
The world’s philosophy follows man-made traditions which are deceitful and void of substance. It is a man-made law, which profits them nothing. Paul tells the Colossae Christians that only God is their sufficiency! No worldly philosophy is necessary to add to God’s truth. Paul states that we are “complete” in Christ.
