James 1:22-25

The theme of this week, and the course, is centered around being a doer of the Word and not simply a hearer. The Greek word we translate as “doer” is poihth,j (poy-ay-tace’) and it is a word that means “to perform”.  Like one who goes to the theater, as a spectator we can sit and listen and enjoy the story being played out on the stage, but it is only the performers who are living it out.  We must emphasize that we can no longer simply be spectators, but must be participants in the message that God has for us, and we must “live it out”.

The purpose of the devotional is two-fold:

  • To introduce the student to the process for good Bible study
  • To emphasize the fact that studying the Bible will do no good to anyone until they take the time to personalize it and apply it to their own lives.

The process for this first Bible study will be the model for the outline of the course:

  • Read and/or listen to the Word
  • Take to heart the message you have heard
  • Live it out

As you consider this week’s devotion, please answer the following questions:

  • How do you personalize your Bible reading and apply it to your life?
  • What is your plan to incorporate daily Bible reading?
