In the above passage, Paul writes about what it is like to take off the old self and put on the new self.
Part of putting on the new self is seeing Jesus as the ultimate source of truth. Taking off the old self is usually a process that takes time. It involves unlearning old, negative habits. Putting on the new self involves a new way of thinking, different from the old, that does away with negative internal talk about self and others.
If taking off the old self is usually a process, then putting on the new self is usually a process as well. It takes time and effort, because it does not come naturally. God originally created us in His image. That was His first plan. Taking off the old self and putting on the new self is part of that original plan.
