The beauty of this psalm is twofold. First, it highlights the reality that David understood that he was created in the image of God. He understood that while he was born with a sin nature, and born of a woman, he was still God’s creation. Second, he explains an Old Testament understanding of original sin, that man is created with a sin nature. While we will certainly deal with those themes in coming weeks, this is an interesting insight when considering who humanity is, and who God is.
There are some things that are universally true about all human beings. We live in a world that values individuality over commonality. What is interesting about this is that only when we think about the commonality of man, do we finally get a true understanding of what is at the heart of the problem of mankind. In this psalm, David paints a picture that applies to every person who has ever lived.
After careful reflection, please answer the following questions.
- In the realm of sin and humanity, why is it important that we see all men as being born in sin, i.e., no one is born without a sin nature?
- What was most impactful to you as you read this psalm?
