John 13:1

Jesus teaches his disciples an important lesson following his meal with them; leaders must serve! Leaders tend to assume they are the ones to be served, but Jesus demonstrates that this is not the case.  Leaders must get their hands dirty, sharing in the difficult tasks that others do routinely. Nothing was too low for Jesus to do as a leader—even stooping low to wash his disciples’ feet.  We must never think so highly of ourselves that we cannot do lowly tasks either.

  • How did this practice of foot washing demonstrate servant leadership in the culture of the time?
  • What are some things we can do as 21st century leaders that will model this practice.
