John 10:10

True abundant life can only be experienced as we live by faith in Jesus. For this week’s journal we return to John 10, focusing on verse 10. In this verse, Jesus makes a powerful statement of His role as the Good Shepherd. Jesus contrasts a good shepherd with the hired hand or even a thief. One of the points that Jesus is making is that the religious leaders of His day were failing the people and in fact, were draining the life out of them, rather than giving them the life they so desperately needed.

John uses the Good Shepherd discourse to effectively illustrate what true life is all about. The life that John has been trying to point us to comes from one source alone. It comes only from Jesus, the Good Shepherd, Who has done and given us everything that is necessary for abundant life. This week we will reflect on the reality of Who Jesus is, and what He has done for us, as revealed in John’s Gospel. It is in our nature to live by faith in the One Who alone can give the life for which we deeply long.
