James 1:8

The Greek phrase for double-minded literally means “double-souled.” A person in this condition is always wavering, irresolute, doubting, changing, and inconsistent. God did not create us to be unstable people. He created us in His image. God is not unstable; He is the same today, yesterday, and forever. God is dependable and consistent. He wants us to be the same. Unfortunately, most of us are not fully stable, but we are grateful for His mercy when we are fickle and faltering.

Synonyms for double mindedness include indecisive, hesitating, vacillating, and wavering. Synonyms for hesitate include procrastinate, question, waver, tarry, vacillate, doubt, linger, delay, defer, deter, waffle, and pause. The double-minded man has problems making decisions and sticking with them. He is also changing his mind concerning relationships, career, ministries, and churches due to instability.

Perhaps we can understand this even better by defining stable. Stable means not likely to change or fail; steady and firmly established; not easily moved, disturbed, thrown off balance or likely to break down. How many can say that they fit this description in their personality and makeup?

As you move ahead with your ethical plan, single mindedness is crucial.   When we do not do what we believe, it creates a dilemma and instability, a poor testimony, and a poor legacy.  The good news is that God is a God of grace.  He forgives and enables us to move ahead in greater ways.   Being transparent and repentant when we fail ethically is crucial to our relationship with God and others.

What might you need to change in your life to line up with what you know is ethical? Make the decision and with God’s power and strength, move ahead!
