In the world of sports, ethics and values often seem to take a backseat to competition and winning at all costs. The passage from Corinthians reminds us of the importance of running the race of life with integrity and purpose. Ethics in sports involves integrating spiritual principles and values into the athletic realm.
To win a prize in a competition, people must demonstrate that they have honed their abilities to a greater degree than others. This is especially true in the arena of sports. But God’s ways are higher. To win the prize in God’s eyes, we must emphasize the importance of honesty and integrity in all aspects of life, including sports. Athletes should compete with a sense of fairness and uphold the principles of truthfulness, even in the heat of competition. Athletes should view their opponents as fellow human beings deserving of respect. They must emphasize the Golden Rule – treating others as you would like to be treated. They should compete with humility and a spirit of sportsmanship. The sports community is a part of the larger human community. Just as all Christians should strive to serve and honor God in their earthly pursuits, athletes should use their opportunities in sports as a chance for outreach to others.
Athletes strive for an earthly prize and, we too, are on a journey to win in life. Ethical concepts such as fair play, honesty, respect for others, living in community, and outreach to others, mirror the values we should uphold as Christians. Our goal is not an earthly, perishable crown; rather we have the ultimate goal of an eternal reward from God.
